The Climate and Terrain of Northern Mexico | Prickly and Abrasive
The arid desert geography of the Sonora region may at first appear somewhat inhospitable. However, upon closer review, a rich and diverse ecosystem plentiful in flora and fauna emerges. Here, the native plants and animals calling this part of Mexico home have evolved to be tough, and hunters here should be prepared with a similar mindset and gearing plan to optimize their chances at a big ram. For example, an increasingly popular piece of equipment many visitors opt for are a sort of armored chap/gaiter that is resistant to the ever-present potential of pierces and punctures inflicted by desert plant life. Some good leather gloves are also advisable for the same reasons.
The Gear | Clothing and Equipment Recommendations
Throughout the hunting season (December to April), visitors to the area can expect temperatures ranging from 40 degrees Fahrenheit at night and early morning to 95 degrees Fahrenheit during the hottest hours of the afternoon and early evening. We recommend hunters bring 2 complete changes of lightweight, synthetic clothing, with an obvious emphasis being placed on camouflage and earth-tone materials. Leather hiking boots and a light down vest or jacket and warm cap serves well to keep one comfortable in the early hours, before the mercury starts to rise in the early afternoon. At that point, protection from the sun becomes essential, so make sure to have sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen in your daypack, which is all the bigger your backpack needs to be.
